Our love should reflect the boundless love of God

One of the qualities in God’s love is that of limitless generosity.  It bursts all boundaries.  It extends to everyone without exception.  That is the point made  in the other two readings today.  The young and generous prophet Jeremiah is called not just to minister to the people of Israel but “to all the nations”.  Jesus in the Gospel today mentions to his own townsmen the names of Elijah and Elisha, who had worked among non-Jews and had been more favourably received by them than by some of the Jews.  The implication is that Jesus’ mission cannot be restricted to the Jews or to any one social group.  It is for all.  By preference it is for the weak, the needy, the marginalized.   This message does not find favour with them and they lead him to the brow of the hill to kill him.  But he walks through their midst unharmed.  His time had not yet come.  When his time would in fact come, he would be led to another hill where he would be killed, his outstretched arms on the cross embracing the whole of humanity for whom he had died.  “Greater love has no man than this …….”
