Rest in Peace

Lay Readers

Some say there is an additional 11th Commandment: don’t get caught.  Originally applied to wrongdoing, it neatly covers the uninvolved life as well.  Leave me alone, I couldn’t be bothered.  In short, don’t get caught.

It’s futile really, because every life gets ‘caught’.  A well known Irish poem and hymn puts it wisely: ‘I líonta Dé go dtugtar sinn’ - may we be gathered into God’s net’.  Wise - because there are so many nets spread out for us.  Options tantalise and divert.  Consumerism casts its enveloping mesh of created need with ‘must have’ commodities.

There’s the net of image building, focusing on success and the externals so as to be ‘in’ and socially acceptable.  By that model a modern Peter, flushed with fishing success, would have started a business school on successful fishing.  Thankfully he went humbly to the source - Jesus.

The net of addiction enmeshes people and their families.  Depression and despair can bring troubled souls to depths where the sun is blotted out and living loses its value.  Pray simply to be drawn into God’s net where life has the sweetness of goodness, acceptance and hope.  It can’t be done, of course, if we are trapped in one of the other nets - or to use another fishing image, if we miss the boat.
