In
(For-)giving We Receive There
is a natural opposition in us to the message of forgiveness. Nobody requests a sermon on this
topic. Yet, we know its
necessity. Archbishop Desmond
Tutu of South Africa perhaps put it best: ‘Without memory, there is no
healing. Without forgiveness,
there is no future.’ However,
many potential problems come to mind. For example, should one ‘turn the
other cheek’ in the case of rape, or of murder, or of child sexual
abuse? What about an abused
spouse? To
err is human, to forgive is divine.
It demands superhuman effort.
But it is the only way forward. Within us, as St. Paul aptly
reminds, lies the man of earth and the man of heaven. Both battle for supremacy within
our own lives. It
is a truth as ancient as the story of David fleeing from the envious
hatred of Saul bent on killing him (First Reading). Reconciliation was the only way
forward. It is the truth of
Jesus. His gospel command
remains an immense challenge: ‘Love your enemies’. Seemingly impossible, but it is
attainable. Others have shown
the way. God, give us the
courage to follow them. (Fr.
