"THE BOG BODIES OF EUROPE"
Westport Civic Trust will host an archaeological lecture by Dr. Ingelise Stuijts in the Atlantic Coast Hotel, Westport, on Tuesday September 11th at 8 pm. ALL WELCOME.
In this lecture some of the stories surrounding bog bodies found in Northwestern Europe, including Ireland will be explored. These inscrutable ancestors from past history are giving up their secrets, and Dr Stuijts is an expert who can translate their hidden messages for us.

Dr Ingelise Stuijts, the Director of Environmental Research at The Discovery Programme, studied archaeology in the Netherlands and gained a PhD from Groningen University with the publication of her book on Pleistocene and Holocene vegetation in West Java. In 1995 she translated the book ‘Through Nature to Eternity: the bog bodies of Northwest Europe' written by Dr Wijnand van der Sanden, from Dutch to Danish. She came to Ireland in 1997, analysing wood and charcoal from numerous objects, including those from the Lisheen Mine Archaeological Research Project in Co Tipperary. She has been with the Discovery Programe since 2002, contributing to the Lake Settlement Project, the Mediaeval Rural Settlement Project and the Late Iron Age and Roman Ireland Project.
