District Lunatic Asylum: A History

A lecture by

Dr. Fidelma Creaven

The GMIT now occupies the site of the Castlebar District Lunatic Asylum, later known as St Mary's hospital, which opened in 1866. For the next 139 years people with mental illness were treated here until it ceased to function as a Psychiatric Hospital in 2005. This talk will focus on 1901 as a year in the life of the hospital.
