This talk will show the scale and complexity of the evidence of the presence of a large wolf population in Ireland right up to the late 18th Century.

The evidence includes material from archaeological, placename, folklore and other cultural sources along with a more detailed reconstruction from 1400-1786 from a wide variety of historical records as well as including earlier historical reconstructions most noticeably the work of Harting (1880) and Failey (1984). Wolf population estimates using a variety of data will be carried out along with identifying causes of extinction using the available documentary evidence and also finally the possibility of reintroduction will be addressed.

All are welcome.
