River Moy.

The quality of angling on the Moy River remained good over the week with a large average size of salmon still being caught. Rain early in the week and, again, at the end, raised water levels in the river to a moderate flood for this time of the year and colored the river. The reported catch of salmon for the week was 210 bringing the total for the year so far to 1288. 

The Ridge Pool produced a fine salmon of 10.76 lbs for English angler Roy Taylor, while Northern Irish angler, Colm Mellon, banked two salmon for 3.24 and 7.33 lbs. David Rogers, from England, caught two salmon while spinning, a 6.58 lbs and a 9.52 lbs fish, while Tipperary angler, John Ryan, had a 7 lbs fish. On the Cathedral Beat, Welsh angler, Tom Christie, took two salmon, for 4 and 10.5 lbs., while fly-fishing. 

French angler, Gerald Groult, caught a fine 11 lbs salmon while spinning at Gannon’s Fishery. Eighty-six year old English angler, Cliff Rusted, left salmon angling to late in life, which is a shame seeing as he caught 6 salmon, his first ever, during a three day angling session on the Foxford Fishery.  Mr. Rusted was fishing with worm and spinning. Fellow English angler, Nigel Cox, caught a 5 lbs salmon while fly-fishing at the same fishery. On Rinanney, Swiss angler, Patrick Zolliker, caught a 9 lbs fish. 

Brendan Doyle from Monaghan with his 16 lbs salmon from the Cloongee Fishery.

The Board’s Cloongee Fishery fished well this week. It produced a fantastic 16 lbs salmon for Monaghan angler, Brendan Doyle (pictured) while spinning. Fellow Monaghan angler, Jimmy Scotson, banked a 8.5 lbs fish while David Crawford from Northern Ireland, and Paul Gough from England, each had 4 salmon for 2 days fishing. East Mayo Anglers Waters also produced 4 salmon for French angler, Claud Thomas for 2 days angling.   

Lough Conn.

Angling on Lough Conn was slower than in previous weeks with fewer anglers venturing out on to the lake. Approximately 75 anglers landed 66 trout for 90 rod days. The popular fly patterns during the week were Bibio, Green Peter, Green Dabbler, Olive Bumble and Spent Gnat. 

Dermot Dunn from Offaly caught 5 trout for 7 lbs the best a 2 lbs fish. Kilkenny anglers, Rory Gaskin and Pat Rawley, boated 3 trout for an evening’s fishing, returning them all. Visiting Spanish anglers Mr. and Miss. Guerrara, caught two nice trout of 1.75 lbs and 1.5 lbs.    

Ballisodare River.
Angling on the Ballisodare River has slowed a little when compared to the previous weeks due to the low water levels in the system. Despite this, some fine salmon were still caught. Stephen Castles banked a lovely 13 lbs salmon while local angler, Vincent Henry, had a 12 lbs hen salmon on a yellow shrimp fly. Gerry McHugh caught and returned a 7 lbs and a 5 lbs fish on a shrimp fly. 

Lough Furnace.
Good numbers of fish are present in the Lough and showing well but catches are still slow. Despite this, Pat Hughes had two salmon for 6lbs and 5.5 lbs while Terence Bradley, from Northern Ireland, boated a 5 lbs fish. Moy Estuary.
The Moy Estuary continues to fish very well with anglers catching good numbers of sea trout. The average size of fish has been in the 1 – 2.75 lbs range with mackerel strip being the most productive method.

Ballin Lough.
The number of anglers fishing Ballin Lough for the week was low. Those who did fish found the Goats Toe and Daddler fly patterns productive. Brian Jameson and P J Marsh had 3 fish, the best for 2 lbs. Martin McGuire, from Newport, boated a fine 4.5 lb rainbow.  
This popular fishery was restocked with good quality rainbow trout in recent weeks and is well worth fishing. Day and evening permits are available and include boat hire. To book, contact Mrs. Gill on 098-26128.
