River Moy

The Moy Fishery fished extremely well throughout the week, with 467 salmon caught, the majority taken on fly, with most of these being released. Tuesday past, saw the Cathedral Beat host the annual Juvenile Angling Competition, where 44 juvenile anglers took part, with a total of 33 salmon caught between them. The Cathedral Beat continued to fish well for the remainder of the week, with two on fly for Colin Lynam, Dublin, including this year's heaviest to date from the Cathedral Beat, a fine specimen of 13.5lbs. Pollnamonagh produced fish, with two caught by Geoff Belcher, England. The Spring Wells yielded salmon with Andrew Pearse, England catching one on fly, as did the Ash Tree pool. The Community Beat, the Black Banks and the Point also proved successful beats for some. The Weir Pool had a good week, with Jesus Ugatte, Spain, catching three, releasing two, while Joze Ocvirk and Borut Jerse, both of Slovenia, caught and released a total of 4 salmon. However, the Ridge Pool had a very successful week, with over 180 salmon caught, including three for Jack Charlton whose best was 6.7lbs. Rene Roche, France also with three to the fly as did Antonio Rabel Pastor, Spain. The Freshwater beat produced its share also, with four apiece for Stuart Sumnall and Andrew Green, both of England.

As part of the Ballina Salmon Festival, Ballina Salmon Anglers' hosted an under 16 Festival Fishing Competition which was held on Saturday at the Canal side Park, with parents and children alike enjoying a fine morning. Forty-five children in total fished the competition which was won by Wynne Dempsey, with two salmon. Mathew McHale was second and Morgan O'Malley was third. Heavy rain on Saturday evening led to flood conditions on Sunday, causing an extremely large run of salmon through Ballina, coupled with a very heavy angling effort, as anglers from all over the country and beyond congregated on the Ballina Salmon Anglers' water. Mostly fishing worm, large numbers of salmon were taken in these conditions.

Upstream at Mount Falcon angling improved, where Andrew Wisharp N.Ireland had three, with his best at 6.5lbs. The Knockmore water, Attymass, Byrne's and Armstrong's all continued to yield fish and at Gannon's the trend continued, with Cecil Nixon, N. Ireland catching one of 5lbs on the worm. At the Foxford Fishery, Michael Raper and party of four had 43 salmon for the week, releasing twelve. Rinanney had a very successful week and the Foxford town fisheries also produced fish. At Cloongee, David Robinson, UK and Brian Corrigan, Monaghan, were among those to land salmon. East Mayo Anglers' water fished reasonably well, including fly caught salmon for Billy McGhee, Ballyvary and Sean Garvey, Louth.


Ballisodare Fishery

Ballisodare continued to produce great fishing, with a total of 165 caught for the week, 74 of these safely released. A group of four visiting French tourists enjoyed a very successful trip to Ballisodare, catching a total of 32 salmon and releasing 14. R.Kelly, Co.Antrim caught a 7lbs salmon on the prawn while Paddy Byrne, Strokestown had a very nice fish of 9lbs on fly. Local Angler Seamus Brogan also had a fine fish on the fly, weighing in at 10lbs.


Burrishoole Fishery

The Burrishoole Fishery continued to improve from last week's result, with 24 salmon caught for the four day open period. Dermott Seymour enjoyed success catching four salmon in total, while Pat Byrne, Cavan had three. Eamon Giblin, Clare, Tim Aldiss, England and Martin Hughes all did well, catching three salmon apiece, while Oliver Corcoran had one.


Ballin Lough

Angling on Ballin Lough improved somewhat from last week, with 26 anglers catching a total of 56 trout, (31 released). Pat Murphy and boat partner had 8 rainbow trout; releasing 6 with their best fish at 3lbs. Ten trout (8 released) were caught by Ruth and John Mattlea, Leitrim, with their best fish 2.5lbs. Cork anglers Ian Wilson and friend had 6 trout, with their best at 2.5lbs.


Loughs Billberry & Lannagh

The 16th annual McConville Cup was hosted on Billberry and Lannagh Loughs between Friday 9th and Sunday 11th July. This year saw a record entry of 142 anglers taking part in the competition which proved testing. Derek Madden was this year's winner, with two trout for 3.38lbs, Alan Brown was second with two for 3.32lbs while Seamus Kelly took third with two for 2.82lbs. Tom Carroll of Islandeady won the prize for heaviest fish, Juliet Jerry won the best lady angler section while Shane Walsh won the best club member section.
