River Moy

Despite a reduced angling effort on all fisheries during the week the River Moy still returned a reported catch of 331 salmon. The Ash Tree Pool produced its share, with seven salmon reported for a successful County Cavan contingent of four anglers. Among those to have success at the Ash Tree were Patsy Smith, who had three salmon to the fly, and Patrick Bannon, who had two also to the fly, his best weighing in at 6.5lbs.

The Spring Wells yielded one for Jeffery Holton, England, while at the Cathedral Beat, 20 were caught. David Elliott, N.Ireland, caught one salmon of 5lbs on the Cathedral, Padraig McKenna, Mayo, had two, his best at 6.7lbs, while Jude Nevin, Longford also had one. The best catch of the week on the Cathedral went to Ronan Gibbons, Westport, fishing the beat for the first time. Ronan landed a nice 9.8lbs salmon on a size 8 Bann Special, using a single handed rod, and also caught a grilse.

On the Ridge Pool, a total of 27 salmon were landed, including one for David Gault, England, one of 5.8lbs for Eamon Sheehan, England, while Mark Foster, also England had three salmon to the fly. Upstream, the Ballina Salmon Anglers' water continued to fish well, as did the Mount Falcon Fishery, where Rodger Morris and friend, U.K had a total of 14 salmon over two days. Knockmore and Attymass waters fished well as did the Coolcronan water, where 14year old Nathan Rodgers, Dublin had one salmon and Tony Furlong, Wexford had three salmon.

Byrne's, Armstrong's, Gannon's, Rinanney the Foxford Fishery and Foxford town waters all continued to yield salmon. On the East Mayo Anglers' water angling remained steady with John and Fred Crowe, U.K. catching a salmon each on the fly, while John Geary, Dublin had two. Finally, John Buckley, Athlone landed one nice fish of 6lbs on the East Mayo water.

Lough Conn
Despite a drop in angling effort, some areas of Lough Conn produced good catches over the week. Participating in the "catch and cook scheme" from Pontoon Bridge, Paul Fearon, Dublin, had one trout while Tom Templeton also of Dublin, had two trout trolling Rapalla lures. James McWalter, U.K. also angling out of Pontoon Bridge had two trout on dry flies.

Angling from Kelly's Boat Hire, Cloghans, Gerry Scott, Belfast, had two trout of 1lb each, with Martin Cawley, Cloghans, catching two, his best 3lbs taken on a Green Peter in Cloghans Bay.

John Warren had good success on the Abbey shore, boating 5 trout in quick succession on a wet Green Olive pattern.

Ballisodare Fishery
A persistent northerly breeze made angling conditions difficult for fly anglers. However, 44 salmon were reported for the week. Catches this week included two grilse of 4lbs and 3lbs for Ian Martin, Antrim, and one superb fresh run 9.5lbs salmon for Mark Graham, taken on the fly. With heavy rain promised for the week ahead it is hoped that fishing will improve once again.

Lough Arrow
Angling on Lough Arrow has continued to be sporadic, yet some anglers have reported good success. Noel Clinton had four trout over the week between 2lbs and 3.5lbs on a dry Wickham's Fancy size 16 while Damien Smith, Dublin had two at 2lbs and 3.5lbs. However, Peter Dunne enjoyed the greatest success of the week, boating four fish, two of which were 2lbs, one at 3.5lbs and the best reported of the week, a trout of 4.5lbs.

Lough Doon

Anglers who availed of this managed wild brown trout fishery enjoyed some success. Paul Campbell, Tyrone, caught and released two trout which came to Daddies, while boat partners Kevin Keane and Kyle McCallan caught 6 trout, all to a Water-boatman. Kyle again had success fishing with David Gerity, catching 6 trout between the pair, for a total weight of 8lbs, all taken on black and red nymph patterns.

Ballin Lough

A total of 27 anglers fished Ballin Lough for the week and reported 32 trout, 8 of which were released. Roland Seeler, Germany boated 4 rainbow trout, with his best 3lbs. Emmet Stagg had three trout, his best weighing 3.5lbs while John Fullard had 3 also, his best weighing just over 3lbs. The most successful flies for the week were Green Peters, Bibios, nymphs and muddlers.

Sea Angling
Belmullet Sea Angling Club held its annual Shore Angling Competition on Sunday 15th in Broad Haven Bay, with anglers enjoying fine weather and excellent conditions for shore angling. Seven species in total were caught during the competition, which was won by Shane Gilvarry, Newport S.A.C with six varieties. Michael Dunleavy, Belmullet S.A.C took second with four varieties, with Kevin Walsh, Belmullet S.A.C taking third with three varieties. The heaviest fish prize went to Tony Lally, Belmullet S.A.C with a Pollack of 5.8lbs.
