Sea Angling

Skipper of the Leah, Donal Kennedy, reports good angling on Killala Bay over the past few days, with fine weather assisting angler's efforts. Plenty of mackerel were still to be had, with whiting up to 1.5lbs also being taken. Pollack up to 8lbs were caught, as well as ling, thornback ray and a few cod. One lucky angler had a nice 10.5lbs huss and others reported cuckoo wrasse and gurnard.

Sunday the 10th October saw Killala Bay host the annual sea angling competition sponsored by An Bolg Bui, Emmet Street, Ballina. This competition is one with a difference, where in fact the smallest fish landed on the day takes first place, with second place being awarded to the angler who boated the largest. With most angling taking place on the eastern portion of the bay, a total of nine species were recorded. Very good catches of cuckoo wrasse were reported, as well as good numbers of red gurnard, pouting and pollack up to 8.5lbs. Fishing on board the Deltic with skipper Jimmy Gallagher, Gearoíd O'Scolaí won the competition, with a poor-cod of 14cm and also took second place with a pollack of 8.5lbs.

Pike Angling

Angling guide Kenny Sloan, fishing with two visiting pike anglers reported reasonable fishing on local lakes over last weekend. Fourteen pike in total were caught weighing up to 12lbs. Kenny reported that the bigger fish did not appear to be feeding. With weather conditions set to change in the coming days, it is hoped this change will trigger the larger pike to begin feeding once again.

Pike anglers enjoyed a good day on Lough Gill on Sunday 10th October, with 21 boats participating in a competition. In total 17 pike were recorded for the day, which was won by boat partners Keith Trotter and Noel Cawley, who captured and released a pike of 12.5lbs.
