Salmon Angling
River Moy

The River Moy fished well over the weekend, following high water levels during the week. Good angling was had on the East Mayo Anglers Association waters, where five spring salmon were reported. Martin Curley, Ballinasloe, took the best fish of the week on the Moy, a 14lbs salmon caught on the fly, with Mixie Clarke, Bohola also landing a fine 13lbs salmon from the Association waters, which was taken on the spinner. Visiting angler, Jim McLean, N.Ireland, landed one of 10lbs on the spinner as did Jimmy Malone, Straide. Phil Birne also had success with the spinner, catching a salmon of 8lbs. Elsewhere on the Moy, Keith Gleeson, Dublin, landed one of 9lbs on the worm at Gannons, while the first fish from the Foxford Fishery was caught by John Seery, Ballina, on the spinner.

Ballisodare Fishery
The Ballisodare Fishery continued to produce great catches, with a total of 22 salmon caught for the week. Among those to have success at Ballisodare was Frank Adams, N.Ireland, who landed a fine fish of 10.5lbs. Sligo angler Francie Kearns also caught a 10.5lbs salmon while local angler Richie Waters got one of 11lbs. The fly proved successful for Seanie Maye and Jimmy Cuffe, Sligo , who caught salmon of 11 lbs respectively. Visiting anglers also enjoyed success at Ballisodare, where John O'Neill, N.Ireland, caught one of 10.5lbs and Andrew Pearson, U.K. had one of 8lbs to the fly. Colin Lynam, Dublin and Martin Birdy, Carrickmacross, also caught salmon while angling at Ballisodare.

Carrowmore Lake
Varying wind speed and direction somewhat hampered angling on Carrowmore in the early part of last week. However, towards the weekend angling conditions improved resulting in five fine spring salmon reported. Ken Henry, Sligo, had success on Friday with the best salmon of the week, weighed at 12lbs, while three salmon were caught on Saturday. Tom Tynan, had the best fish of the day at 11lbs, while John McBride, Co. Antrim, boated one of 7.5lbs with Gerry Deane, Castlebar, landing one of 7lbs. Declan Dooley, Co. Kildare, was the only angler to have success on Sunday, boating a salmon of 7.5lbs.

Trout Angling
Loughs Conn and Cullin

Conn and Cullin Anglers held a spring fishing competition on Sunday, April 10th with 27 anglers participating. In total 6 trout over the 13inch size limit were caught, with numerous other smaller trout also caught and released. Orla Walsh, Cloghans, was the winner on the day, with a trout of 0.765kg, second was Stephen Brown, Cloghans, with a trout of 0.555kg and in third was Francie White, Sligo with a trout of 0.510kg.

Ballin Lough
Ballin Lough continued to fish very well over the past week, with 13 rods accounting for 109 rainbow trout, 80 of which were safely returned. Paul Caslin and Colin Petton, Castlebar, had great success boating 31 trout, the best of which weighed 2.5lbs. Brendan Ryan and boat partner also enjoyed their day, catching 22 trout, with their best fish 2lbs. The best fish of the week, a rainbow of 3.75lbs was caught by Bernard Kennedy and boat partner, Castlebar. They also caught another 11 trout on their day out on Ballin Lough. Sea Angling
Donal Kennedy, skipper of the Leah, reported good angling on Killala Bay on Sunday past. A party of 10 anglers ventured out and with southerly winds and very little swell the prospects for the day were good. Several cod were caught averaging 5.5lbs as well as numerous ling of the same size. Pouting were caught in abundance, with some falling just under the specimen weight of 3lbs. Shoals of coalfish were also encountered, many weighing up to 5lbs and being caught in pairs and trebles. Another encouraging sign of things to come was the increased numbers of herring caught, with approximately 35 boated during the day. However, pollack were in short supply, but those caught averaged 5lbs and were clean coloured indicating they had recently moved in from the deeps. An enjoyable day was had by all, and the range of species present shows good prospects for angling in Killala Bay in the months to come.
